My grandmother always narrated me an incident about how she came India during the partition and how she even got separated from grandpa in the course. I always, till the date, wonder what was the thing that despite losing her husband, she does not regret coming to India.
When I asked her the same question, she responded with just one word. The word was, patriotism. This word and this feeling was the reason for her to migrate and settle down in India. But, I still think that does this really define patriotism?
With every phase of the development of India, the definition of patriotism changed but the heart behind it has remained same. 1940’s was all about walking every mile to first gain and then rejoice the independence. 1960’s was about a new wave of expressing patriotism through cinema. 1980’s brought in the sports patriotism and 1990’s led to the economic independence through LPG.
Patriotism is definitely associated with symbols of national identity such as flags, anthems and national holidays. However, as generations evolved, so too did the expression of what it means to love one’s country.
